Jack Davey
Who are you and what do you do (when you're not on the bike!)?
.
Jack Davey – I’m one of the reprobates behind Morvelo and The Overland, so a pretty big part of my time off the bike is spent thinking about time on the bike. I’m also pretty likely to be found underneath a broken-down motorcycle, or creating some kind of grungy meandering sonic mire as part of the prog metal band Karab.
.
- What drives you to get on your bike? Is it your commute, your sport, your passion... or something else?
.
To be totally honest, I don’t know any more. This year has been pretty strange, and I never quite realised how much I would miss riding every day in the way that my commute sort of dictated back in the pre-pandemic times. Riding for enjoyment is how it began I guess, but I’ve used a bicycle for transport since I was 13. Growing up in London, even after I learned to drive it never crossed my mind that a car would be a more suitable option for most journeys. Faster, inherently fun, cheap – what’s not to like?
.
Over the past ten years or so I’ve taken my riding a little more seriously I guess, but all of it stems from that original sense of escapism, endorphin-rush and straight-up awesomeness. I seek out improvements in my own times, power output, etc but none of that ever comes at the cost of taking in the places that my riding takes me through, or the changing seasons, or the bizarre quirks of the natural world that become visible at that perfect travelling speed: human on bicycle.
